Studymerit is an online resource that provides students with lecture notes, study guides and summaries. Its goal is to help students improve their grades and increase their chances of getting into top universities.
If you are interested in animals, there are several merit badges you can earn related to the subject. These include Mammal Study, Bird Study, Insect Study, Oceanography, and Reptile & Amphibian Study.
The Bird Study Merit Badge is a Scouts BSA nature-related merit badge that introduces youth to the fun hobby of birding. Its a healthy, easy, outdoor activity that supports the Scouting mission of getting youth in close contact with the natural world so they make ethical choices to preserve it.
The requirements include observing and identifying at least 20 different wild birds, including their habitats and preferred foods, using binoculars or a telescope. Scouts also demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of a bird by sketching or tracing a perched bird and labeling 15 different parts of it. They also learn how to identify a bird by its song or call and explain why that is important to birding.
Scouts also learn about the role of birds in the ecosystem and how humans can attract and support bird species by building a feeder or creating a bird bath. They also discuss the importance of biodiversity and its link to the human food supply.
This exciting merit badge helps Scouts learn about mammals and the important role they play in our ecosystems. It also teaches the importance of protecting these animals and the many efforts that are being made to do so. The badge also includes a requirement to organize and carry out a project that will positively affect the population of mammals in your area, which will help fulfill one of the troop’s community service requirements.
Scouts will learn how to classify mammals into their respective groups within the animal kingdom and trace mammal life cycles. They will also work together to plan and execute a project that will impact the number of mammals in their own backyard.
The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is offering a workshop designed to help meet the requirements for this badge. All activities are taught by a registered Merit Badge Counselor. Scouts must be registered with BSA and bring a medical form AB to participate.
Scouts will get a closer look at 20 of the estimated 900,000 species of insects and their habitats. They will observe the main characteristics that distinguish insects from other animals and describe the orders of insects. They will identify three species of insects that are helpful to humans and five that are harmful, and explain how each is used. They will make a scrapbook of photos, sketches, and illustrations and share it with their counselor.
Sure, Halloween’s famous creepy crawlies aren’t insects (they’re arachnids). But it makes lightning less scary to know how it’s formed (requirement 5). And that’s just one of the interesting things Scouts will learn in earning the Weather Study merit badge.
Oceanography is the study of Earth’s oceans. They cover more than 70 percent of our planet, influencing the weather, soil, and air. The Apollo astronauts hurtling toward the moon looked down on a blue sphere speckled with clouds—that’s the oceans.
Chris Lamie teaches the Oceanography merit badge at NHSM’s Merit Badge University each year, and the kids are always fascinated by the science of the seas. He has his Scouts build simple homemade plankton nets, which they use in the Charles River to catch the tiny floating plants and animals that make up the ocean’s food chain.
Scouts also explore how saltwater, waves, and underwater topography affect the lives of marine scientists. They learn about the properties of seawater, including salinity, temperature, and density, and find out why it’s important for people to protect the oceans.
